Hurricane Charley warnings discontinued for Jamaica

The Event

All warnings were discontinued for Jamaica at 11.00 am AST, August 12, 2004, following the passage of Hurricane Charley. Hurricane Charley, a category 1 Hurricane on the Saffir/Simpson scale, passed over Jamaica on August 11 -12, between Wednesday midday and early Thursday morning. Charlie began affecting the island on Wednesday morning with tropical storm force winds and heavy rains and was upgraded to a category one hurricane around mid afternoon. Charlie carried maximum sustained winds of near 75mph.120km/hr.with higher gusts. Reports indicated flooding as a result of the rains associated with the system affecting mainly the north and south western parts of the island.

Flooding & Wind Damage:

St. Elizabeth and Manchester were severely affected by flooding.

Kingston experienced wind damage to utilities and housing.

Deaths:

One man died in the Lennox, Big Woods area of St Elizabeth as he attempted to rescue family members from the flood waters.

Shelters Opened

Three shelters were opened in St. Elizabeth

1. The B.B Coke High School in Junction - Fifteen (15) persons

2. The Nain Primary and Junior High School - One (1) person

3. Big Woods Primary School - Six (6) families

Search & Rescue Operations

Search and rescue teams were deployed in St. Elizabeth and effected rescues of persons stranded as a result of flooding.

The NEOC continues to manage the situation. The Coordinating Unit has received no request for assistance and therefore advises the Regional Response Mechanism to stand down.
