Outline of the MA-programme Humanitarian Assistance

The one-year interdisciplinary MA-programme Humanitarian Assistance of the University of Bochum is offered by the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict, in close cooperation with experts from non-governmental and international organisations. The programme consists of four parts which are described below. It has a total workload of 90 ECTS.

Introduction
The Intensive Programme (September)

The programme starts with a 10-day intensive course at one of the network universities. The intensive programme brings together all students and many lecturers to study and discuss some of the main themes in international humanitarian assistance.
The Intensive programme 2004 will be held at the University of Luxembourg from 5 to 14 September (5 ECTS credits).

First semester
General Courses (October - January)

During the first semester students attend the following general courses at their home university (5 ECTS credits each):
  • Geopolitics
  • Anthropology
  • International Law
  • Medicine and Public
  • Health Management
Second semester
Option (April - November in Bochum/February - May at the other universities)

In the second semester students can choose an option in one of the network universities. Students can indicate preference for two or three universities, but change is dependent on a 1 to 1 basis and cannot be guaranteed. For European students this student mobility is supported by the Socrates programme.
During the second semester the University of Bochum offers an option titled: International Organizations in Humanitarian Crises (10/20 ECTS credits).
The topic of the Master's thesis is linked to the second semester option (20/25 ECTS credits).

Internship (February - March in Bochum/July - August in the other universities)
The programme entails an internship of two months at an international organisation or institution working in the field of humanitarian assistance (5 ECTS credits), which is not compulsory.
Intended Audience
The MA-programme Humanitarian Assistance at the University of Bochum is open to postgraduates with a degree (Master's or the equivalent) in  one the following fields: International Relations, History, Law, Medicine, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Management, Geography, Spatial Sciences or related fields. Working experience and field experience is considered an advantage.
