Heavy rainfall in Central Vietnam causes 11 deaths

(17/11/2010 09:29:45)Heavy rainfall and consequent flooding in Central Vietnam over the last days have cost the lives of 11 people with 2 still missing. More than 11,186 households have been evacuated so far. Rescue and relief operations are on-going in anticipation of further flooding.

Rain and flood situation

The average rainfall over the last two days, from 7pm, Nov.14 till 7pm, Nov. 16, is 150 to 300mm, with larger rainfall at Nam ?ông (TT. Hu?) 412mm, Tà L??ng (TT. Hu?) 506mm, Th??ng Nh?t (TT. Hu?) 460mm, Trà My (Qu?ng Nam) 475mm, Ba T? (Qu?ng Ngãi) 365mm, S?n Giang (Qu?ng Ngãi) 355mm, Minh Long (Qu?ng Ngãi) 387mm, Trà B?ng (Qu?ng Ngãi) 741mm.

From 7pm yesterday till 4am this morning the average rainfall has been 10 to 30mm with some places in Quang Ngai with 30 to 50mm.

The following rivers have peaked and have decreased a little: B? river (Th?a Thiên Hu?), and Trà B?ng river (Qu?ng Ngãi). Others are still slowly rising and causing more floods: Vu Gia and Thu B?n river in Qu?ng Nam, and Trà Khúc and V? river in Qu?ng Ngãi

In the next 24h, flood levels will slowly decrease in Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam, but will keep rising in Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh. At noon, river levels in Quang Ngai will have reached its peak. Water levels in Quang Tri are decreasing.

Most reservoirs in provinces Quang Tri to Quang Ngai are full and water is overflowing. Several large reservoirs have discharged water: Binh Dien, Huong Dien, Phu Ninh and Dinh Binh reservoirs.

Flood situation:

- Quang Tri: 1,000 households affected, floods 0.2 to 0.5m, districts Thi?u Phong, H?i L?ng, ?aKrông and ?ông Hà town

- Thua Thien Hue: 27,245 houses (h) flooded in 25 communes in 5 districts and cities, floods 0.4 to 1m, districts Phong ?i?n 650h, H??ng Trà 450h, Qu?ng ?i?n 756h, TP. Hu? 25.000h, Phú Vang 390h

- Quang Nam: 1,200 households affected, floods 1 to 2m, along Thu B?n, Vu Gia and Ban Thach river

- Quang Ngai: 8,500 households, floods 0.5 to 1m,, at some places 1.5 to 2m

- Binh Dinh: 65 households affected, floods 0.5m, V?n Long, V?n Khánh, Xuân Phong Nam, Xuân Phong villages An Lão district

People evacuated:

- Thua Thien Hue: 8,000 households

- Quang Nam: 1,582 households, 6,500 people

- Quang Ngai: 1,586 households, 6,572 people

Preliminary damages

- Death: 11 (Quang Tri: 1, Thua Thien Hue: 4, Quang Nam: 2, Quang Ngai 3, Binh Dinh: 1)

- Missing: 2 (Thua Thien Hue: 1, Quang Nam: 1)

- Injured: 3 (Thua Thien Hue: 1, Quang Ngai: 2)

- Households affected: 9,586

- Houses flooded or damaged: 36,945

National response

On the 16th of November, the Ministry of Health under directive 7914/BYT-VPB7 has provided 200,000 Chloramin B tablets and 200 life-jackets to the Health department of Thua Thien Hue

The Ministry of Defense has mobilized additional forces (172 soldiers) and logistics (6 boats and 3 vehicles) to assist with the flood response in the affected provinces

The CCFSC regularly updates the provinces on the situation and measures to take to deal with the floods
