Update on tropical depression affecting Central Vietnam (15/11/2010 12:28:21)

Over the last 48h, a tropical depression caused heavy rainfall and consequent flooding in provinces in Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands. The average rainfall over the last 48h was 100 to 200mm. River water levels will still increase in Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue.

Rain and flood situation

Over the last 48h, tropical depression No.18 caused heavy rainfall and consequent flooding in the evening of Nov. 14 in provinces Thua Thien-Hue to Quang Ngai, Gia Lai and Kon Tum. On the evening of Nov. 14 the depression weakened into a low pressure. It is projected to dissolve gradually during the day on Nov. 15.

Over the last 24h, average rainfall in Quang Tri to Binh Dinh was 70 to 110mm, and 100 to 150mm in places in Quang Ngai and Quang Nam. Larger rainfall in Tam K? (Qu?ng Nam) 164mm, Trà My (Qu?ng Nam) 186mm, Lý S?n (Qu?ng Ngãi) 303mm, Châu ? (Qu?ng Ngãi) 249mm, and Trà Khúc (Qu?ng Ngãi) 161mm.

The average rainfall over the last 48h was 100 to 200mm, with locally up to more than 257mm (Bình ?i?n, T.T.Hu?), 270mm (Châu ?, Qu?ng Ngãi) and 364mm (Lý S?n, Qu?ng Ngãi)

On the 15th of November, river water levels will still increase in Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue, but will decrease slowly in Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Gia Lai and Kon Tum.

A cold front in the North with average temperatures likely to fall to between five and seven degrees Celsius in the northwest, will cause medium to heavy rainfall in the Northern to North-Central provinces . Precautions should be taken for flashfloods and landslides.

Quang Ngai: communes flooded 7; evacuated households 660

Reservoirs in provinces Quang Ngai and Quang Nam are all safe.

Damages

National Highway 1A and 14E flooded at some places, next to a number of provincial and district roads.

Damage in Quang Ngai:

- Houses collapsed: 12

- Houses seriously damaged: 3 houses

- Agricultural land damages: 14ha

- Cattle lost: 17

National response

CCFSC has issued directive 38-39/CD-PCLBTW to provinces Thua Thien Hue to Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, and Kon Tum to provide directions on measures to be implemented to deal with the rain and flood situation and the required response and recovery.

The Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Transport and the provincial Flood and Storm committees are providing comprehensive instructions to the relevant sub-national authorities.

CCFSC and NCHMF are closely following up the situation, especially with the Northern provinces and coastal provinces from Quang Ninh to Ha Tinh regarding the expected rainfall caused by a cold front.

The Command of Border Guards has informed more than 40,411 boats with 192,868 workers on the condition and projections regarding the tropical depression.
