Thailand: Situation in flood-hit provinces returns to normal

BANGKOK, 21 August 2010 (NNT) - The situation in 9 flood-stricken provinces has returned to normal, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).

The DDPM reports that a total of 13,085 households in 25 districts of 9 provinces were hit by floods last week. The stricken provinces include Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lampang, Phrae, Nan, Rayong, Trat, and Lamphun. The local administrations have already come to the people's assistance and are now in the process of surveying the damage. The overall situation has returned to normal.

On a positive note, the series of downpours over the past week has helped raise the water levels of many major reservoirs around the country up to 50% of their capacity. However, there are five dams, which are Mae Kuang Udomthara, Moon Bon, Pasak Jolasid, Kaeng Krachan and Pranburi Dams, of which the amount of water stored is still below 30%.

Currently, 120 other districts in 27 provinces, such as Tak, Phitsanulok, Sukhothai, Uttaradit, and Khon Kaen, remain under the influence of drought.
