Kyrgyzstan: Earthquake OCHA Situation Report No. 3

HIGHLIGHTS

- Urgent humanitarian needs of the affected population have been fully met.

- The government is now requesting assistance for procurement of prefabricated houses/shelters in prevision of the winter.

- No further situation report will be issued.

SITUATION

1. On 5 October 2008 an earthquake of magnitude 6.6 on Richter scale occurred in the South of Kyrgyzstan (39.515=B0N, 73.768=B0E), at the border with Tajikistan and China. The same area was subsequently hit by aftershocks of magnitude 5.1 and 4.6. All tremors were between 27 and 35 kilometres deep.

2. The worst affected areas are located in Chon-Alai and Alai regions, approximately 220 kilometers from the main city of Osh. Data made available through the Kyrgyz Ministry of Emergencies indicate that the total death toll has risen to 75 people of which 43 are children. The total number of injured is 141, of which 93 are children.

3. On 9 October, the Minister of Emergency Situations emphasized in a briefing that no further humanitarian assistance should be sent to the village and that all basic needs of affected population had been met.

4. The minister further informed that any additional humanitarian supplies would be stockpiled by the Ministry for contingency purposes.

NATIONAL RESPONSE

5. Government has sent the first batch of 4 prefabricated houses to Nura village. Each prefabricated is equipped with essential household items.

6. An additional temporary accommodation for the residents of Nura village has been established by the Government in Gulcha (village located 150 km from Nura) in the dormitory of a technical college.

7. The Government has allocated 5 million Soms (USD 135,000) for the purchase of prefabricated houses. An additional amount of 10 million soms (USD 270,000) has been donated domestically

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE

8. The Government of Qatar has sent a plane with 44 tons of humanitarian assistance including food, tents, blankets, and medicines.

9. The Governments of Turkey and Uzbekistan have reported the bilateral donations of in-kind humanitarian assistance (food & construction materials).

10. The Government of Slovakia has pledged USD 100,000 to the Government of Kyrgyzstan
