Philippines: Tzu Chi emergency relief in Malabon city and Cavite province

On 8 August, the Philippines began to experience heavy rains from tropical storms Pabuk and Wutip, resulting in severe flooding in several northern provinces and landslides in mountainous areas. At least 12 died and more than 6,000 were forced to flee to evacuation centres.

On the morning of 10 August, 17 volunteers of Tzu Chi Philippines distributed emergency relief supplies in Malabon City to 1,000 households, located within an hour by car from both Tzu Chi Philippines Branch Office (in Quezon City) and Tzu Chi Philippines Campus (in Manila). Relief supplies included clothing, slippers, bread, biscuits, milk and distilled water.

The mayor of Malabon City provided military escorts for Tzu Chi volunteers to enter the disaster area and conveyed his hope that Tzu Chi would help Tonsuya as well as Panghulo neighborhoods, where water levels reached more than a meter. .

On 11-12 August, Tzu Chi Philippines enter Panghulo to assess the damage in Tonsuya. According to the neighborhood head, Tzu Chi was the first NGO to provide care in the area.

On 14 August 2007, 30 volunteers from Tzu Chi Philippines distributed relief supplies, person-to-person, by hand to residents in Rosario, Cavite Province. In-depth assessment revealed that the local area did not have water or power. The local slum environment, located near Manila Bay, was unsanitary, with piles of trash and plenty of mosquitos. The social workers discovered residents living in poor, cramped conditions. A few patients suffered from tumors but had not yet seen a physician.

Tzu Chi Philippines has continued to monitor local needs as the situation changes.
