I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

Humanitarian actors continue to focus on gaining access and meeting humanitarian needs after recent fighting in North Darfur and South Darfur following the collapse of the peace process. Because of the on-going situation there has been very limited access to affected populations. An estimated 44,385 people have been newly displaced. Southerners residing in northern Sudan continue to return to southern Sudan in large numbers. A total of 95,000 people have returned to South Sudan since October, with more than 42,000 in the last two weeks showing that the movement is delinked from the vote in the referendum. Inadequate organization of transport has left many stranded. In southern Sudan, partners continue to provide emergency assistance to newly arriving returnees on the basis of needs assessments and reinsertion packages are being provided to families at their points of final destination. The Government of Southern Sudan is strengthening its coordination role and has allocated additional funds to help meet the urgent needs of returnees.
