Monsoon toll in eastern Indian state rises to 392

New Delhi_(dpa) _ The monsoon-releated death toll in the eastern Indian state of Bihar rose to 392 Wednesday with the deaths of 40 more people, media reports said.

Despite the higher toll, major rivers were receding and airdrops of relief goods were suspended as aid workers could begin again to use roads.

Four military helicopters had been deployed since August 4 in flood-hit areas and had dropped 69,185 ready-to-eat food packets, a state official told the PTI news agency.

More than 18 million people in 9,064 villages in 20 districts of Bihar have been hit by the floods. Crops, houses and public property worth 211 million dollars has been destroyed by overflowing rivers and heavy rain.

Since monsoon season began in June in India, 2,082 people have been killed, and 40.84 million affected, according to National Disaster Management.

The Central Water Commission reported that there are still three high flood, 22 moderate flood and 24 low flood sites in India. dpa rk ls
