Floods Central Vietnam - update 7/10/2010

Emergency relief operations are on-going, as well as further search and rescue. So far 48 people have died, 19 are injured, and 18 still missing.

Tropical depression

- Tropical depression currently located 18.3 to 19.3 degrees north latitude, 107.6 to 108.6 east longitude, on the west coast of Hainan Island (China), 270km east of Thanh Hoa - Ha Tinh province.

- Forecast: in the next 24h, the location of the depression will remain the same

- Wind level up to 6, with gusts up to 7-9

Rain and flood situation:

- On the 6th of October affected provinces had little to no rain

- Water levels in rivers from Ha Tinh to Quang Binh are receding, but flood levels at Ngan Sau river and Kien Giang rivers downstream still high

Flood situation:

o Ha Tinh: total of 35 communes in 6 districts (Huong Khe: 13 communes, Vu Quang: 9 commune of Huong Son: 4 communes; Duc Tho: 4 communes, Thach Ha: 4 communes, Cam Xuyen: 5 communes).

o Quang Binh: total of 106 communes in 6 districts (Tuyen Hoa: 20 communes; Minh Hoa: 17 commune of Bo Trach: 11 communes, Quang Trach district: 16 communes; Le Thuy: 27 communes; Quang Ninh: 13 communes).

o Hue: 1,450 houses flooded in Phong Dien, Huong Tra, Quang Dien

- Forecast: flood levels slowly to recede in the next coming hours and days

Casualties:

- Death: 48 (Nghe An 5; Ha Tinh 7;Quang Binh 33; Quang Tri 3).

- Missing: 18 (Nghe An 3; Ha Tinh 1; Quang Binh 14; Quang Tri 0)

- Injured: 19 (Nghe An 2; Ha Tinh 3; Quang Binh 11; Quang Tri 3)

National response:

- On 06/10, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai and Minister Cao Duc Phat, led a working group to Ha Tinh and Quang Binh provinces to direct the response to floods and contunue to direct the recovery in Quang Tri and Thua thien Hue

- The Ministry of Health, Transport, and Public Security have issued directives to guide their sectoral response and recovery

- The Ministry of Transport units have worked on the repair of the roads. Highway one is completely cleared and the Ho Chi Minh highway is still to be traffic jam at two sections (in Quang Binh).

- The Ministry of Defense has organized 7 flights carrying 5.6 tons of cargo (instant noodle and water) supplies to the isolated areas in Quang Binh.

- The Committee of Vietnam Fatherland Front will support the provinces from Ha Tinh to Thua Thien Hue with cash valued 1.5 billion VND

- The CCFSC continue to monitor the situation and provide necessary directions to provinces affected for effective response and recovery

- NCHMF is closely monitoring rainfall, flood, inundation, and the tropical depression and is reporting frequently to the CCFSC.

- On 6/10/10, Ha Tinh request from Central for relief, recover for flood consequences as followed: 5000 tons of rice; 400 billion cash support; 61 composite boat, 3 medical boat; 15 tons of vegetable seed; 3000 kg water treatment chemical, 15,000l disinfectant chemical, 400 tons of rice seed, 50 tons of corn.
