Viet Nam: Typhoon Ketsana situation update no. 5

I Summary

- Storms are predicted for the areas already affected by typhoon Ketsana which may trigger further floods and landslides in mountainous areas

- Number of casualties has raised to 92 and 19 missing

- The government initially estimates damages in five of 12 affected provinces to more than $120 million.

- A mission chaired by Vice Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai visited a number of areas to monitor the situation.

- Six Joint Rapid Assessment teams with GoV, UN and NGOs participation are ready to be deployed today and tomorrow in the six most affected provinces

II Situation Overview

- The national weather bureau warned of more flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas and high waters in low-lying areas.

- Rain in northern areas have caused floods and landslides in two additional provinces, Nghe An and Ha Tinh.

- The main road from Danang to Quang Nam, Quang Ngai provinces is now accessible but there is very heavy traffic

Isolated Households

- 500 households left are isolated in Thach An, Binh Minh, Binh Son by Tra Bong river and the roads leading to them are too damaged to make transportation feasible

- Hoa Lien shrimp breed station (Lien Chieu, Da nang) has 6 people isolated. Border Army has been requested to rescue those people.

- Doc Phu shrimp breed station (Binh Duong, Binh Son, Quang Ngai) 12 households are isolated owing to tidal surge.

- 100 shrimp breed stations are also isolated by tidal surge.
