China: Yunnan Earthquake 2011

The situation

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on Richter scale hit Yingjiang County of Yunnan Province on 10 March 2011. According to the report by Ministry of Civil Affairs at 7a.m today, the earthquake has caused 25 people death, 250 people injured, almost 130,000 people displaced, altogether there were more than 280,000 people affected. Roads, water supply and electricity supply were also disrupted and over 18,000 houses were collapsed.

Hong Kong Red Cross Actions

The Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) has immediately mobilized 1,000 family kits (included blanket, towel, T-shirt, shorts, mosquito net, slippers, plastic bucket, meal utensil, torch and soap) stored in Yunnan Provincial Red Cross disaster preparedness warehouse, valued at RMB242,700, to meet the emergency needs of victims. It is expected that the family kits will arrive at the affected region and be distributed to the earthquake-affected population by today.

The Red Cross Society of China Actions

Yunnan Red Cross has sent an assessment team to Yingjiang County swiftly after the earthquake and dispatched 500 quilts and 500 jackets to the earthquake-affected area.

The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has launched the third level of emergency response and mobilized 150 tents, 3,000 quilts and 730 coats from Yunnan Red Cross disaster preparedness warehouse in support of the relief operation.

A rescue team of the Beijing Red Cross has also departed for the affected region.

The Hong Kong Red Cross is closely monitoring the latest situation and maintaining close communication with the RCSC. Future action plans will be derived based on future assessments.
