Ways to solve conflicts in South Caucasus discussed in Vienna

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 18/ TrendNews, corr. E.Huseynli/ The meeting of the MPs from Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia in Vienna focused on the public-political situation in South Caucasus region. "During the meeting was mentioned the importance of holding meetings of the MPs for the solution of the conflicts in South Caucasus," Eldar Ibrahimov, deputy chairman of Azerbaijan's delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, told TrendNews in a telephone conversation from Vienna.

Attended by the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's special representative for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and Georgia Goran Lenmarker, a meeting of the Azerbaijani, Georgian and Armenian delegations to the OSCE PA was held in Vienna on Feb. 18.

The winter session of the OSCE PA will start on Feb. 19-21.

According to Ibrahimov, Lenmarker said during the discussions that new opportunities must be searched for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict solution and the occupied territories must be returned.

Ibrahimov said that the meeting of the political committee of the OSCE PA on Feb. 19 will discuss the results of Lenmarker's visit to the region.

Ibrahimov added that the meeting of the Azerbaijani, Georgian and Armenian MPs can be organized in this format in the future.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan lost all of Nagorno-Karabakh except for Shusha and Khojali in December 1991. In 1992-93, Armenian armed forces occupied Shusha, Khojali and 7 districts surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. – are currently holding the peace negotiations.
