Nepal: Extra-judicial killings still continuing: NHRC

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said extra-judicial killings involving the security agencies still continue while crime rate grows in the country.

During an interaction with senior officials of the Home Ministry and the security agencies at the NHRC office in Pulchowk on Monday, NHRC commissioners said four dozen cases of extrajudicial killings involving the security agencies were reported in the last two years out of which 13 cases have already been confirmed by the NHRC.

NHRC commissioners said the rights body has already recommended action in these cases, emphasising that the security agencies need to be active to stop gross human rights violations including those committed by non-state parties.

"The NHRC has received information that extreme force is used by security agencies. This is a matter of worry," NHRC chairman Kedar Nath Upadhaya said.

Home Ministry secretary Govind Kusum admitted that security challenges had grown with the presence of as many as 117 armed groups in the country and pledged cooperation with the inquires conducted by the NHRC and act on its recommendations.

Inspector General of Nepal Police Ramesh Chand Thakuri, senior officials of Armed Police Force were also present in the interaction.
