MINURCAT trains prison managers in Chad

The Prisons Advisory Unit of MINURCAT organized, between 16 and 21 November 2009, a training workshop for prison managers. The workshop, which took place in N'Djamena, drew participants from all over Chad, comprising 40 Heads of prisons, mostly from eastern Chad. The Minister of Justice and the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General also attended the event.

The six-day training focused on human rights, penitentiary science, ethics and deontology, prison report writing, record keeping, HIV/AIDS, gender, and the general management of prisons.

The training, which was the first of its kind in Chad, aimed at building capacity among prison personnel. It provided participants with general knowledge and skills to perform more efficiently, and in the long haul, to help establish a safe, secure and humane prison system in Chad. These objectives are in line with the mandate of MINURCAT Prison Advisory Unit, which is to support the establishment of safe and secure prisons, the implementation of a humane prison system, and the establishment of a professionalized Prisons Service in Chad.
