A dream has come true for children in Hanwang – they have finally got their long-awaited playground at the central kindergarten of Hanwang School. A few days ago, Amity disaster relief and reconstruction work staffers visited the site of the recently completed playground and were pleased to see that everything was in very good shape.
On almost 4400 square meters, the central kindergarten has plenty of space for its 360 children, who grow up together in 12 groups. Right now, however, two other kindergartens which are also affiliated with Hanwang School have not yet been completed, so more than 500 children come to the central kindergarten.
The Amity Foundation, in cooperation with the post-earthquake reconstruction authority of Jiangsu Province and the education bureau of Mianzhu City, drew up a plan for providing facilities and equipment to Hanwang School during the rebuilding of Hanwang Town. Hanwang had been totally destroyed in the May 2008 earthquake; afterwards it was decided to rebuild the town at a nearby location while the ruins will remain in place as a memorial.
Kindergarten children need more opportunity for physical activity and play than school students, so Amity decided to provide playground equipment for both indoors and outdoors use to the central kindergarten. Amity staffers did what they could to make sure everything would be in place in time for the new term, and indeed the children enjoyed their slides, see-saws and monkeybars when they visited.
