USAID West Bank/Gaza Mission Program Achievements - Week of 22 Jun 2009

WATER SANITATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE

Road Constructed in Northern West Bank: USAID completed construction of 5.2 km of Jaba'-Yassid road in the northern West Bank. The road connects Jenin, Nablus and Tubas governorates and serves several surrounding villages. Construction was done under USAID's Infrastructure Needs Program. The project replaced a dirt road with a two-lane road of 6.5 meters paved width. It incorporated safety measures and proper water drainage. The project cost $2,448,121 and generated approximately 5,000 work days for Palestinians in the area.

Agricultural Roads and Retaining Walls Constructed: USAID completed construction of retaining walls and agricultural roads on the periphery of Jeensafoot Village east of Qalqilia in the northwest of the West Bank. Construction was done under USAID's Emergency Jobs Program. The walls prevent soil erosion, define boundaries of agricultural land, and increase the safe movement for farmers traveling to and from their fields. The project also decreases the production cost of agricultural crops grown in this village by facilitating the transport of the harvested crops from farming areas to local markets. The project cost $80,917 and created 1,938 person days of employment for 45 workers.

DEMOCRACY AND GOVERNANCE

Continuing Education Curriculum Developed for Palestinian Judges: Under USAID's Justice and Enforcement, Rule of Law (Netham) project, five senior Palestinian Judges developed the first Continuing Education Curriculum for Palestinian judges. The Palestinian judges worked closely with Jordanian counterparts and experts to complete the curriculum at the Jordanian Judicial Institute in Amman, Jordan. The judges designed the course plans, syllabi, and training materials for the SJC Continuing Education Training Plan in both criminal and civil subjects. SJC Continuing Education training will target all judges serving in the Palestinian Conciliation, First Instance, and Appellate Courts.

Support for Establishment of the Higher Council of Traffic: USAID's Palestinian Authority Capacity Enhancement Project (PACE) conducted a workshop to support the establishment of the Higher Council of Traffic. 52 Palestinian road safety stakeholders from the Higher Council of Traffic, PA ministries and agencies, and NGOs attended. The Minister of Transportation thanked USAID for its efforts to enhance traffic safety capabilities.

Ministry of Transportation Personnel Learn Hebrew: USAID's Palestinian Authority Capacity Enhancement Project (PACE) provided Ministry of Transportation personnel with Hebrew language training. The new language capabilities will help Ministry of Transportation personnel deal with Hebrew documents issued by the Israeli Transportation Department.
