Sri Lanka: Vanni Emergency OCHA Situation Report No. 22

This report covers the period from 12 to 18 June 2009. The next report will be issued on or around 19 June.

I. Highlights

- 4,444 IDPs were transferred from two schools in Vavuniya town to the newly established Sumathipuram IDP site in Anuradhapura district.

- Preparatory work on plot 2 of the Kodikamam Ramavil IDP site in Jaffna was completed, and 617 IDPs were transferred to the site.

II. Access & Security

- Access to camps in Vavuniya has improved, though some delays are still experienced.

III. Situation Overview

- 4,444 IDPs from were transferred from two schools in Vavuniya town (Gamini MV and Vavuniya Tamil MV Secondary School) to the new IDP site at Sumathipuram in the Anuradhapura district.

- In Trincomalee, 1948 IDPs (648 families) were transferred from the G. Sinhala School in Pulmoddai to the Sahanagama IDP site - plot 2 on 18 June.

285,018 persons crossed to the Government controlled areas from the conflict zone.
This represents an increase of 4,206 IDPs since the last report (Sitrep No.21) on 11 June 2009. The increase is due to the inclusion of additional data on IDP caseloads in hospitals.

Hospitals:4,870(4) IDPs (injured and care givers) are in hospitals in various districts(5) as of 16 June 2009.

3,054 people have been released from temporary camps into host families and elders’ homes as of 11 Jun 2009. The majority of these people are elders, people with learning disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
