Sri Lanka Flood Situation Update No. 5 - 21 May 2010

Situation

Since Friday, 14 May 2010, heavy pre-monsoon rains have resulted in flash floods, high levels of water, strong wind, landslides, lightning, thunder storms and incidents in 13 of the 25 districts in Sri Lanka: Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matara, Galle, Nuwara Eliya, Trincomalee, Puttalam, Mannar and Anuradhapura. As of Friday, 21 May 2010, 576,920 persons (134,648 families) have been affected by the heavy rains. This includes displacement of 15,002 people and 20 deaths. Reports indicate that 1,349 houses have been damaged or destroyed. The Government of Sri Lanka is responding to the crisis at both local and central levels. The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) in coordination with the Sri Lanka Police, Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) is assisting with evacuations, delivery of assistance in affected areas where access has been cut off.
