JSR, Government promise to work together on Darfur

In continuation of his meetings with Government of Sudan officials in Khartoum, Joint Special Representative (JSR) Ibrahim Gambari was received today by the Minister of Defence, General Abdelrahim Mohamed Hussein.

They held a discussion on developments in Darfur, including the prospect for peace in the region. Also present at the meeting were Lieutenant General Magzoub Rahma, Head of the General Directorate of International Relations and Ambassador Mohammed Abdullah Idris, Head of the Peace Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The JSR expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome that he has received from the Government and the people of Sudan since his arrival. He promised to do his best to meet their expectations, particularly in promoting the attainment of a durable peace and security in Darfur. "I shall do my best to work for the implementation of UNAMID's mandate in a very impartial, fair and transparent manner," assured Gambari.

For his part, the Sudanese Minister of Defence assured the JSR of the trust and full support of the Government of Sudan as he takes up his new and challenging assignment, saying "We will do everything to be helpful for this mission, which is very important for the peace in Darfur."

The two also exchanged views on Chad-Sudan relations, and promised to work closely in facilitating the full implementation of the agreement between the brotherly countries.

Accompanying Mr. Gambari on his visit were senior UNAMID officials, including Deputy JSR, Henry Anyidoho and Director of Political Affairs Abiodun Bashua.
