Measures to prevent spread of water borne diseases in North


With heavy rains prevailing these days in areas in the North, the Governor of the Northern Province GA Chandrasiri has advised the officials of the Department of Health of the Northern Province to take steps to commence a special health programme for the prevention of Malaria and Dengue in the resettled areas.

This was mentioned at a Progress Review Meeting held at the Regional Assistant Commissioner's Office in Vavuniya yesterday by the Governor. Presently resettlement is taking place in Mannar, Kilinochchi and Mullaithivu areas. Accordingly a Housing Project to build 7000 houses will be started Governor Chandrasiri said.

The nursing and other staffs of the hospitals of Mannar Adampan and Thiruketheeswaram would be provided with bicycles. To control the spread of diseases it is necessary that mobile health services be provided in these areas.

The Governor has taken steps to provide Motorcycles to the Government officials in the resettled areas in order to enable them to perform their official duties well. The necessary permission to the government servants of the North to go about on their official duties would also be provided.

Bus service from Jaffna to Thunukkai via Paranthan, and from Vavuniya to Thunukkai via Mankulam would be started very soon said Governor Chandrasiri.

It was also decided to provide Canter vehicles for these people to transport their goods.

The Governor drew the attention of all officials concerned to ensure the completion of the work with regard to the accelerated "Uthuru Wasanthaya" programme as envisaged.

A.Sivaswamy, Chief Secretary, Northern Province, Mrs. Rupavathi Ketheeswaran GA Kilinochchi, and representatives from the Departments and Ministries in the North were also present at the occasion.
