Record crop, but food access remains issue
The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, in its report of 22 October on the crop and food security assessment, announces that crop yields in 2009 in Tajikistan are exceptionally good, but access to food remains difficult for vulnerable families.
The wheat crop is at a record high of 829,000 tons, one quarter more than last year. Yields of potatoes and other staple crops also substantially increased this season. Timely and well-distributed rainfall, improved seeds, and wider use of fertilizer all contributed to this improvement.
Nevertheless, prices for wheat and other food items remain above pre-food crisis levels. This factor, together with the drop in remittances from migrant labor, continues to hamper the ability of vulnerable populations to buy food.
