Viet Nam: Tropical storm kills 15 in central region

Tropical storm Noul and subsequent torrential rains have killed 15 people and left two others missing and eight injured in central provinces, said Vietnam's official weather agency Saturday.

The Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control said the rains sank 115 boats, pulled down 47 houses and damaged or blew off the roofs of 226 other houses.

Phu Yen Province registered the most fatalities in the country with seven people killed, followed by Khanh Hoa Province with three killed, Binh Dinh Province with two and Lam Dong, Ninh Thuan and Quang Nam provinces each with one killed.

The storm, which is the tenth of the year, caused floods that submerged 1,717 houses, 8,879 hectares of crops and 60 km of roads.

Phu Yen Province has asked the government for VND30 billion (US$1.7 million) and Binh Dinh Province has asked for VND18 billion ($1 million) in financial support.
