Sri Lanka: 50 truck convoy dispatched to Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu

Another 50 truck convoy left Vavuniya yesterday carrying 350,000 packets of essential items for displaced civilians in non liberated areas of Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu, according to the Commissioner General of Essential Services S.B. Divaratne.

The convoy, which left Omanthai around 10.30 am, was carrying food and other essentials provided by the Indian Government and distribution was scheduled to begin from Pudikudirippu yesterday itself, he added.

The Government expects to send 1,500 metric tons of essentials within this week to IDPs in non liberated areas.

According to the Ministry of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services, the Government has also allocated funds to carry out relief measures for civilians affected by the floods in the Wanni.

Another 20 trucks carrying 200 metric tons of food items donated by various organisations will also be dispatched to non liberated areas during the week, the Commissioner said.

Additional shelter material, hygienic items and other essentials too are to be dispatched to civilians affected by the floods.
