Update: Aid expanded in Indonesia's earthquake affected Sumatra

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Weeks after a deadly earthquake struck Indonesia's West Sumatra Province in late September, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) continues to expand its response, providing temporary shelter materials, bedding kits, cooking supplies, and other essentials for more than 5,000 families in affected areas.

Although ADRA's primary intervention was intended to last up to four weeks, additional funding has allowed for a month-long extension, which will help provide aid to a total of 5,387 families.

At the request of survivors in the targeted region, ADRA distributed shelter kits for 2,250 families within Sungai Geringging sub-district, in Padang Pariaman. Another 1,500 families in Sungai Geringging have also benefited from an additional distribution of emergency kits, packed with essential supplies, such as bed mats, blankets, and mosquito nets.

A total of 637 families also received emergency kits packed with bed mats, blankets, and mosquito nets, in the sub-district of Sungai Sapih, in Padang City. In Kurao Pagang, Padang City, ADRA has distributed emergency kits for another 1,000 families as well as kitchen supplies, including pots, frying pans, and kitchen utensils.

The response, worth more than $208,000, was funded by ADRA International, the Church of Jesus Christs of Latter-day Saints, ADRA Czech Republic, ADRA Canada, ADRA Australia, ADRA Denmark, ADRA United Kingdom, ADRA Finland, ADRA France, ADRA Netherlands, ADRA New Zealand, ADRA Norway, ADRA Sweden, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in West Indonesia, and the ADRA Asia regional office located in Bangkok, Thailand. ADRA Indonesia has also received technical assistance from ADRA Australia.

The 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Padang in the province of West Sumatra on Wednesday, September 30, followed by two deadly earthquakes, which caused landslides and the deaths of at least 1,117 people, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
