Eritrea: Farmers in Shebah administrative area striving to boost production


Ginda, 20 November 2009 – The Farming community in Shebah administrative area, Ginda sub-zone, is making coordinated endeavors with a view to achieving food security, Mr. Afa Abir, Administrator of the area, disclosed.

The task being undertaken focus on diverting river waters flowing from the highlands for agricultural purposes through constructing embankments and water catchments.

He further explained that as a result of the land leveling program, a total of 300 farmers have now become owners of agricultural land, and that various popular campaigns are being carried out in support of families of martyrs and needy nationals.

Mr. Afa went to say that educational institutions and potable water supply projects have been made available in the area, as part of efforts to expand equitable social services in remote areas. A new well has also been dug and the necessary solar energy-generating device has been installed so to provide reliable potable water supply to the local inhabitants, he added.

Mr. Afa further called on the farming community to reinforce soil and water conservation activities, and thereby achieve food security.
