Nearly 11,000 acres in North to be cultivated

Under the "Api Wawamu Rata Nagamu" program, the government has taken steps to cultivate nearly 11,000 acres bare lands which have been abandoned for a long period due to LTTE terrorist activities.

Accordingly, with the financial assistance of Asian Development Bank, a large stock of agricultural equipment and machineries including 37 tractors at a cost of 50 Million rupees were sent to the North on last Thursday.

According to the officials, 3,100 acres of paddy lands and 750 bare lands in Thunukkai in Mullaittivu District, 3,000 acres of paddy lands in Mannar, 4,000 acres of paddy lands in Adampan and 110 acres of high lands in Mulukkavil in Killinochchi District will be cultivated under this national drive to reawakening the nation with agricultural development.

In this mega cultivation program, each farmer in these areas will be given Rs. 3,000 worth 'seed paddy' and another 4,000 rupees for each acre to plough their paddy lands by the Agricultural Department.
