Eritrea: Newly constructed micro-dam in Halib-Mentel providing reliable potable water supply to the inhabitants

Elabered, 16 November 2009 - The newly constructed micro-dam in Halib-Mentel administrative area, Elabered sub-zone, is playing significant role in easing potable water supply problems and promoting vegetable farming, according to reports.

The local inhabitants highlighted the contribution of micro-dams and water reservoirs in enriching soil fertility and boosting output, and thereby improving the people's standard of living. Reports indicated that the inhabitants who used to travel long distance to fetch water that was not up to standard have now become beneficiaries of reliable potable water supply.

Commending the Government's vigorous endeavors in expanding infrastructure facilities and implementing development programs with a view to improving the people's standard of living, the local inhabitants noted the significance of micro-dams and reservoirs in enriching underground water resources.

The micro-dam in Halib-Mentel was constructed last year through the collaboration of the Anseba regional Administration and partners, and that it has the capacity of irrigating over 60 hectares of farmland.
