Chile: Earthquake Situation Report #6

This report is based on information received from official sources in Chile and was issued by the OCHA Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, covering the period 9 to 10 March. The next report will be issued on or around 12 March.

HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

- The official death toll to date is 507.

- According to Government reports, some 200,000 houses have been severely damaged or completely destroyed; assessments are still ongoing.

- There are an estimated 90 shelter camps housing 19,000 people in the regions of O'Higgins, Maule and Biobío. Some 25,000 persons are in improvised, temporary shelters, mainly in schools, and an additional 50,000 persons are in urgent need of shelter as they are living in makeshift camps.
