Disaster relief update: Indonesia earthquake, Philippines typhoon

Indonesia Earthquake

The government of Indonesia has appointed Medical Teams International, in partnership with MAp International, to provide medical care through mobile medical clinics in Padang. Our relief efforts are being concentrated in three sub-districts of Padang Pariaman (Sungai Limau, Patamuan, VII Poto sei sarik), an area two hours outside of the center of Padang, which is receiving less attention from government and humanitarian agencies and has severe relief needs.

Our medical team departs Thursday to provide emergency and primary health care in clinics started by MAP International. They will also assist with conducting a rapid health assessment in the sub-districts. We are preparing a second team to be on standby for deployment should there be a need for additional teams to support this project.

Philippines Typhoon

We are sending one Emergency Health Kit each to our partners in Manila, Food for the Hungry and The Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC).

Food for the Hungry is providing health care in makeshift shelters in Manila. They are also responding in five of its affected Child Development Communities in Metro Manila through the distribution of food and non-food items, assistance with debris removal, facilitation of hygiene education, and provision of encouragement and prayer support through local volunteers to families.

CRWRC is providing emergency aid to 285 families in Pasig and Marikina and 135 families in Laguna Lakefront. Emergency kits comprised of water, rice, canned goods, noodles and blankets were distributed to these families. The Emergency Health Kit items from Medical Teams International will be used to address the increase of water-borne diseases and provide critical health care to the families in these communities.
