Following are Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro's remarks at the unveiling of the commemorative banner for the sixtieth anniversary of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East -- UNRWA@60 -- in New York Thursday, 24 September:

It is my privilege to inaugurate the commemoration of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency's sixtieth anniversary here at United Nations Headquarters.

Over the course of its history, the UNRWA has saved countless lives, educated future leaders and offered hope to generations of Palestinians.

Thanks to the unswerving support of the refugee host countries and donors, the UNRWA has been able to provide a better life for millions living in misery and despair.

The Agency has responded to the Palestinians' quest for education. It has helped to meet their health and shelter needs. It has given them tools with which to stand on their own feet.

The Agency's staff have shown remarkable solidarity with people in need. Now is a chance for us to show our solidarity with UNRWA, a remarkable member of the United Nations family.

Looking at the image of smiling Palestinian schoolchildren on the banner behind me, I think we can all agree with the slogan, "Peace starts here."

On this milestone, let one message ring from this podium around the world: the strife and conflict must end.

We are eager for the day when the Palestinian refugee issue is finally settled. Then -- and only then -- can UNRWA's staff complete their mission.
