Kabul, Afghanistan. On 1st February a coordinated operation, between Afghan National Police and troops from the Italian Battle Group of ISAF=B4s Kabul Multinational Brigade, led to the seizure of a weapons cache, including rocket launchers and explosives, in the CHAHAR ASIAB VALLEY, southwest of Kabul.

The operation began at around 0730hrs when the ISAF team, with the assistance of the Kabul City Police, confirmed and secured the location of the cache, allowing the Multinational Brigade troops to catalogue and recover the armaments for destruction, denying their potential use against Afghans and Government forces.

The armaments consisted of:

  • 89 x 107 mm rockets;
  • 2 Anti-Tank M18 US;
  • 8 demolitions charge;
  • 12 x PG 7;
  • 21 x TYPE 65 rockets;
  • 4 x RPG.

The Brigade troops consisted of an Italian security detachment, an Italian explosives disposal unit, a team of German medics and two Italian Navy AB 212 helicopters stood by for medical support. After a thorough check of the site, the Italian team recovered the armaments for safe disposal.

This operation represents another of many recent joint operations between the Afghan Security Forces and ISAF to recover and destroy illegal weapons and ammunition, made possible by the increasing cooperation of the Afghan people and improving the prospects of stability and security in Afghanistan.

ISAF's mission is to extend the authority of the Government of Afghanistan and to assist in creating a safe and secure environment. ISAF operations, through its provincial reconstruction teams and Kabul Multinational Brigade, will continue to focus on the security of the country to create the conditions in which the Afghan people can build a better future for their country.
