Spain sends humanitarian aid to hurricane-hit Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica

MADRID, Sep 05, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX News Network) -- Spain has delivered humanitarian aid to Haiti, Cuba and Jamaica, the three countries ravaged by the hurricanes Gustav and Hanna, authorities said Friday.

A second plane, carrying 53,550 units of pills to make water potable, 30,600 units of dehydration salts, 53 units of filters and four groups of generators, departed Friday noon for Haiti, according to a press release from Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI).

The AECI said Spain had also sent to Cuba 15 tons of commodities: 99 tents, two generators, 1,008 sanitary kits, 1,020 water deposits, 1,200 mosquito nets and 1,000 sailclothes.

Meanwhile, Cuba's Deputy Minister for Foreign Investment and Economic Collaboration Ricardo Guerrero Blanco on Friday expressed gratitude to Spain for the aid.

Guerrero said the aid will be distributed to the affected people in the western province of Pinar del Rio and Juventud island

Spain also sent to Jamaica a plane loaded with 315 sanitary kits, 600 blankets and 500 sailcloths.

The recent tropical storms have killed hundreds of people and caused huge economic losses in the Caribbean countries.
