Indonesia: Faces of the tsunami - Mariyam

Editor's note: Every week leading up to the 5-year, 26 December anniversary of the tsunami disaster, we will share a snapshot of life almost five years after the cataclysmic event.

Almost five years since the tsunami disaster, the Red Cross Red Crescent has helped hundreds of thousands of survivors take significant steps along the road to recovery.

Mariyam Ali, 24 years old, worked for the American Red Cross on Dhuvaafaru. People living on the island of Kandholhudhoo lost everything when the tsunami hit. They were relocated to five islands while their new island, Dhuvaafaru, was built by the Red Cross. A primary and secondary school, athletic facilities (soccer field, track, basketball court), 600 houses, a government administration building, mosque, and harbour were built on 40 hectares and the 4200 residents moved onto their new island in December 2008.
