Sudan: 60% of Darfur armed factions united at Doha talks

The Doha talks continue into Tuesday with delegates from the Darfur armed movements still divided on whether to form a united front before starting negotiations with the Sudanese government. The armed movements are still in consultations with Qatari mediators who are also hoping that the factions will concede to an umbrella group. Secretary of the Revolutionary Movement (Tripoli-group), Mahjoub Hussein, spoke to Miraya FM and said that six Darfur armed movements have formed a coalition and that '60 percent of the movements have united so far'.

Hussein agreed that factions with multiple and varied demands will not serve the best interests of the Darfur crisis. He added that Abdel Wahid Noor's faction might reject a united stance with all Darfur armed movements, a move, he observed, will not be favorable to Sudan in general.

Head of the Sudanese government delegation in Doha, Amin Hasan Omer, had earlier announced negotiations can be conducted either way. With multiply parties or with one united umbrella group, the Sudanese delegation's mandate at the Doha talks is to negotiate.
