Indonesia: International roundtable workshop about developing of commmunity based health and first aid programme


CBHFA programme or in Indonesian known as "Kesehatan dan Pertolongan Pertama Berbasis Masyarakat (KPBBM)" is one of health programme by PMI. This programme has started since 1999. Then, in line with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) commitment, there was revitalization in 2005.

In relation with this programme progress in Indonesia, PMI conducted an international meeting at Park Lane Hotel Jakarta, on 25-27 October 2009. At the same time, PMI and IFRC also launched the programme along with the CBHFA module package officially.

There were 22 Red Cross representatives from Indonesia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, United State, Austria, England, Australia, Cameron, Cook Islands, India, Kenya, Myanmar, Namibia, Nepal, Pakistan, Samoa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor Leste, Sudan, and Zimbabwe as well as the IFRC. The government has responded the meeting positively and it is planned that the representative of General Director of Community Health Management, Health Department Government of Indonesia attending the meeting.

So far, this programme has run in the community and it is focus on supporting the volunteers in the grass root in motivating their community to improve clean and healthy life style. The way to achieve it is by improving their skills in delivering first aids, improving response to disaster and disaster preparedness, and the basic hygiene promotion through counselling activities.

"Through CBHFA programme, community is expected to be active in participating to coping health issues. Also, through this programme, community is more prepared to disaster," says dr. Lita Sarana, the Head of Health and Social Services Division of PMI NHQ.

Prof. Dr. Amal Sjaaf, the Deputy of Health and Social Services Division PMI NHQ, says, "Indonesia as one of the Asia Pasific countries, especially PMI, is reliable to implement pilot project of CBHFA programme since 2007."

He added that this programme has been collaborated and integrated with government programme, such as 'Desa Siaga' or Disaster Preparedness Village, Community Based Sanitation, Community Clinic, and other programme. There are many model projects in four districts in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam Province (Sabang, Bireun, Banda Aceh and Aceh Jaya) with 99 villages supported by 92 facilitators in district level and 1,883 Village Health Volunteers. *
