Sri Lanka: Demining given priority in resettlement process

The process of demining the liberated is being priority in the resettlement agenda to meet deadlines of the 'Northern Spring' (Uthuru Wasanthaya) concept.

The government is much concerned about the safety of civilians to be resettled in the liberated areas.

The LTTE before it was eliminated had mined those areas burying unnumbered mines during its battle with government troops.

India too has extended fullest support to the demining process sending logistical and manpower assistance to expedite the work early.

Several foreign governments too have financially assisted the demining process over the past few months.

Displaced civilians in welfare camps too have expressed their fears to return to areas that are not demined.
