Liberian returnees from Guinea want protection by UNHCR at border points

by J. Cholo Brooks
Liberian returnees from Guinea are appealing to the authorities of the United Nations High Commission of Refugees (UNHCR) to provide them with protection as they anxiously returning home from refugee camps.

Speaking on behalf of her colleagues Madam Mayenda Kromah said Liberian refugees from Guinea who are making their way back home in Nimba are finding it "very hard" in the hands of Liberian securities at border check-points to return home.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Liberian Times, Madam Kromah alleged that during her return from Guinea with her 89 years father she was harassed by a Liberian border security at the Liberian/Guinean border and refused her to enter Nimba because she refused to pay to them money.

She said due to the lack of funds to pay to the security at the border she was denied of her right to enter Liberia, "but with Allah being my helper, a lady who I do not know came to my rescue to pay this amount. After this amount was paid before I was allowed to pass through", she stressed.

Madam Kromah said she is appealing to the UNHCR to provide returnees with security escort at various entry points in order to avoid such embarrassment as were done in her case.

When the Liberian Times visited the Ganta border point to ascertain the allegation by Madam Kromah, an immigration officer who preferred not to be named said the allegation was false, " I can not remember where a lady was charged to pay money before entry", the officer told our Correspondent, but promised to investigate the matter.
