Situ Gintung dam burst victims told to leave shelters

By Multa Fidrus

Hundreds of victims of Situ Gintung dam burst disaster have been asked to leave Wisma Kerta Mukti temporary shelters in Ciputat, Tangerang within two weeks.

Ahadi, the South Tangerang administration assistant, said on Thursday the displaced people had exceeded their stay permit at the buildings.

"We hope the refugees are aware of the time limit and willing to leave the shelters voluntarily," he said, adding that the administration would refrain from any use of force. The South Tangerang government will distribute notification letters to the displaced people on Friday.

The refugees have been resettled at the building following the disaster last March, which killed 100 people.

Ahadi said the refugees should have left the shelters last month after they received relief funds collected from philanthropists.

The Wisma Kerta Mukti I building belongs to the West Java provincial administration while Wisma Kerta Mukti II is owned by an individual who will use the building in the near future.

After seven months, the local government does not appear to begin reconstruction of the collapsed Situ Gintung dam wall, sparking anxiety among local residents as it may cause another flood now that the rainy season has come.
