Highlights
- Meningitis preparedness plan finalized with Preventive department/Head of Epidemiology in three Darfur States and in East Sudan at Kassala &. Gedarif
- EWARS evaluation mission comprising of WHO/MOH and CDC Atlanta completed this weak in South Darfur .
- An interagency mission assessed the situation in Khorabache and Negea (north-western Shaeria) locality after the intertribal fighting
- In West Darfur Arab Medical Union launched the opening ceremony of the Fistula Centre supported by the Egyptians Emergency Relief
- State wide school health campaign launched in Blue Nile state
Area of concern:
- In South Darfur low vaccine coverage in South East Edalfursan is a major concern that will be discussed with partners
- Number of Kala-azar cases in Gadarif State is increasing compare with last year 2008, Plan of action has already submitted to WHO Khartoum office for support
- 9 cases of dogs' bites received in three hospitals in Nayla while , anti rabies vaccine is still in shortage
Coordination:
- Weekly Health Coordination meetings were held in the 3 states of Darfur, Kassala and at field office at Zalengi in West Darfur. In greater Darfur WHO shared the Weekly Morbidity and Mortality Bulletin. The health situation remains stable and morbidities are within normal range and mortalities below emergency threshold.
- In North Darfur, WHO had a meeting with visiting representative of Christian Aid from Khartoum Christian Aid is considering to resume the operation in Zam Zam Clinic originally run by SUDO-NGO (expelled March 2009).
- WHO /UNICEF/UNFPA in North Darfur jointly will join UNMAID's interagency mission to Sertoni together with SMOH to assess needs and identify gaps
- In South Darfur WHO is effectively coordinating with SMoH, UNICEF and UNFPA for provision of health services including immunization to the recently displaced population in Negea
East Sudan:
- Main areas discussed are the seasonal expected meningitis outbreak and low vaccine coverage. A draft meningitis preparedness plan has been shared by SMOH with Health partners. While for coverage of vaccination it was identified that 5 localities have less than 60% coverage. Gaps were identified and collective action will be undertaken by Partners to raise this to acceptable levels . Shortage in Anti Malarial drugs was reported by Muslim Aid in Wager area –resulting in increased number of reported cases. WHO team updated the partners about Kala-azar situation in Gedarif state and shared with them the plan to reduce the density of the vector.
- H1N1 isolation room in RSS operational with staff working 3 shifts per day, one chest physician recruited. Medicines from FMOH yet to be received
