November 4, 2009 – Pol-e Alam, Afghanistan – Agriculture in Logar Province was improved by a huge distribution of high-quality seeds for local farmers.
50 tons of wheat seeds, 70 tons of urea and 25 tons of DAP fertilizer are distributed by provincial Directorate of Agriculture, Irigation and Livestock (DAIL). The project was supported and funded by Czech Provincial Reconstruction Team in Logar.
During the distribution about 1000 farmers will receive 50 kg of whaet seeds – variety GUL 96, which produces the highest yields according to the previous experience. Farmers will be also supported by the appropriate amount of DAP fertilizer and urea.
The assistance is focused on poor cooperative members in the province, which are not able to afford enough amount of seeds.
"The main asset of the distribution is based in the seeds' resistance against the wead rust, which is the main problem for agriculture in Logar. Because of that, farmers' yields are mostly around 2 tons per hectare." Pavel Burian, agriculture advisor from Czech PRT said.
The project is following last year's distribution and was consulted with ICARDA organization, which takes care of seeds improvement in Afghanistan.
Thanks to improved seeds, the yields will be two times higher - in comparison with the previous years. Besides that, dependence on the imported materials will be decreased.
