OPT: ActionAid rebuilds lives in Gaza

ActionAid continues its vital work in Gaza through cash for work programmes, cash grants, care programmes for vulnerable groups and distribution of essential items.

Despite minor ongoing clashes between the Israeli military forces and Palestinians in Gaza, the ceasefire declared in January has held, but although humanitarian aid allowed into Gaza has increased, the overall levels remain below what is urgently required.

The absence of reconstruction materials and spare parts are hindering efforts to resume basic services and implement recovery programmes.

Whilst the water supply in Gaza has improved currently some 40,000 people remain without water access through the public network.

In addition, up to 100,000 people experience intermittent supply of water due to lack of materials.

Over two months on from the end of the fighting, official figures put the death toll from the 21 day conflict at over 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis. Since the end of the conflict, sporadic fighting has claimed additional casualties on both sides.

People's key needs include the reconstruction of shelter, road and bridges, access to medical supplies and hospital facilities as well as food, water and electricity.

Psychosocial care and support, particularly for children is also a priority, as well as protection for other vulnerable groups.

Our response:

- In the immediate aftermath of the conflict we distributed 300 kitchen sets, 300 first aid kits and 300 hygiene kits to 300 families or 1,800 people.

- Cash grants will be distributed to over 90 women through local ActionAid partner Asala. These funds will help women re-establish their small businesses to guarantee sustainable income for their families.

- Our total response will target over 55,000 people, through cash grants, distribution of non food items, cash for work programmes and psychosocial care activities for vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.
