Highlights

1. The crisis in Libya shows no signs of abating. The United Nations estimates that more than 2000 people have died so far. Around 120 000 people have fled to the neighbouring countries of Egypt and Tunisia.

2. WHO is preparing for the possibility of a major humanitarian crisis, and has placed staff in different WHO regions on standby for rapid deployment. The Organization is working with partners to ensure the provision of health care services, including life-saving interventions, in all affected areas. With its partners, it is conducting rapid assessments of health needs and preparing contingency plans that can be adapted to different scenarios.

3. WHO is advocating with the relevant Egyptian, Libyan and Tunisian authorities for the safe transit of medicines, medical equipment and other humanitarian supplies into the country.

4. WHO is also working closely with the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinators in the affected countries, as well as with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, other humanitarian partners and major regional associations such as the Arab Medical Union to assess the situation and plan the joint humanitarian response.
