2009 Objectives
Return
Shelter: Rehabilitation and reconstruction of 10,265 units for IDP and refugee returnees with particular focus in the Central region where higher number of returns occur.
Community-based projects (related to shelter): WatSan projects linked to shelter depending on ongoing needs assessments in areas of return.
Protection: a) Establishment of 16 Return, Integration and Community Centers (RICCs), six in Baghdad and additional ten centers in Salah Al-Din, Diyala, Anbar, Kerbala, Basra, Mosul and Kirkuk.
b) Systematic border monitoring in Trebil (at Iraqi-Jordanian border) and Al Waleed (at Iraqi-Syrian border) crossing points. Additional six border monitoring points are planned in different locations in Iraq.
c) Support to the government return registration center in Baghdad.
IDPs
Non-food items (NFIs): Distribution of 25,000 NFIs and hygiene kit packages on vulnerable IDPs, returnees, refugees and asylum seekers. Maintenance of contingency NFI stock for 100,000 persons
Shelter: 4,000 emergency shelter repairs for IDPs distributed as 1,800 in the center of Iraq, 600 in the north and 2,000 in the south.
Support to communities: Multi-sector micro projects directly targeting communities that host IDPs and returnees through a network of 103 national NGOs
Protection and Assistance Centers (PACs): 14 centers and 35 mobile teams conduct protection monitoring and provide legal counseling and support to IDPs and returnees throughout Iraq.
Refugees and Asylum Seekers
Pending durable solutions through voluntary returns, resettlement to third countries, or local settlement, protection and material assistance for some 40,000 refugees will be provided in camps, settlements and individual urban refugees. UNHCR has 13 refugee camps and settlements in Iraq, the major ones are in Western Anbar (Al Waleed camp for Palestinians, Iranian Kurds and Ahwazis), in Erbil (Makhmour for Turkish Kurds and Kawa for Iranian Kurds) and in Dohuk (Barika settlement for Iranian Kurds). Targeted assistance is provided to scattered urban refugees Iraq wide.
