WFP hunger hotspots: Kenya - 20 Nov 2009

The Government of Kenya has decided that the Agricultural Sector Development Strategy (ASDS), which will be signed in the coming weeks, will constitute the Kenya version of the CAADP. The Code of Conduct which WFP is a signatory to will formalize the process.

Alongside the relief brought by rain, there are fears of massive flooding, particularly in north eastern and coast regions. It is estimated that 1.4 million people soon may be cut off from relief supplies due to impassable roads, including 200,000 people who may be forced to flee their homes as flood waters rise. WFP has prepositioned food for two months in the most flood-prone areas to minimize disruptions and to prevent/reduce the need for expensive air operations. In addition, three month supplies of food for about 338,000 refugees have been prepositioned at Dadaab Refugee Camp.
