Two UNICEF advocates, Queen Rania and Mia Farrow, meet in Jordan

AMMAN, Jordan, 14 October 2009 – Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan, UNICEF's Eminent Advocate for Children, met today with internationally acclaimed actress and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Mia Farrow.

Ms. Farrow was on her way to the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel to raise awareness about the humanitarian situation of children affected by conflict in this region.

Her trip will include a two-day visit to the Gaza Strip, where she will visit a school, a hospital and a family centre, meeting families who lost their homes in the fighting early this year. She will also meet Palestinian children who have been held in detention facilities, and will tour the Jenin refugee camp.

Protecting children's rights

Ms. Farrow has been UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since September 2000. As a powerful advocate for children, she campaigns for their rights around the world, with a special focus on children affected by armed conflict. In 2008, Time magazine named her one of the world's most influential people.

Her Majesty Queen Rania became UNICEF's Eminent Advocate for Children in January 2007. She has long been an active supporter of the organization and its programmes in Jordan and worldwide, having accompanied UNICEF to earthquake-affected areas in Pakistan, learning centres in India and schools in Argentina, Brazil and Morocco.

On her school visits, Queen Rania emphasizes the importance of ensuring that all children – especially girls – enjoy their right to a quality education.

At their meeting in Amman, the two UNICEF champions discussed the situation of children in the Middle East region and the role of international advocates in protecting children's rights.
