Mongolia Floods Situation Report No. 1

GENERAL INFORMATION

Heavy rainfall and hail beginning 17 July caused flash floods in Mongolia. Most seriously hit areas included the Songinokhairkhan, Bayanzurkl, Khan-Uul, Gobi-Altai, and Ulaanbaatar city Ger Districts. More than 3 000 people (1 830 families) were affected while more than 130 families were left homeless. The Hydrology and Meteorology Institute forecasts more rainfall until 25 July, especially in the eastern and central regions.

Damage to Infrastructure

The floods destroyed many bridges, power stations, dams and roads.

HEALTH IMPACT

Flooding caused overflow of sewage pit and lavatories contaminating the environment resulting to probable public health consequences including diarrhea and acute respiratory infections.

Casualties

As of 24 July 26 people were killed including 8 children. The number of injured is yet to be determined.

Damage to Health Facilities

No damages to health facilities have been reported.

RESPONSE

The national government through the National Center for Communicable Disease has provided information on communicable diseases and has emphasized personal hygiene. Residents of damaged areas were organized to clean waste and mud. The government has also evacuated more than 2 000 people from flood-risk areas.

MOH Response

The Ministry of Health has established a working group for assessment and response. Initial assessment indicated the need to strengthen surveillance in affected areas, safe water supplies, and personal hygiene.

WHO Response

WHO coordinates with the Ministry of Health and other health partners for urgent support depending on the need. WHO will be providing funds to the MOH for rapid assessment and emergency supplies.
