UNMIL prepares for Exercise TIGHT GRIP 2 around Liberia

UNMIL PR 147

Monrovia, Liberia - Residents around Liberia may notice an increase in military activity as the UNMIL Military, UN Police, and Liberian National Police conduct a large scale joint security exercise codenamed TIGHT GRIP 2 on Friday, 15 December.

TIGHT GRIP 2 will focus on securing key points and installations in Kakata, Voinjama, Sinje, Tubmanburg, Buchanan, Ganta, Gbarnga, Zwedru, Harper, and Greeneville. This is a follow-up on TIGHT GRIP 1, which focused on the security of Monrovia. The exercise will include a significant number of armoured military vehicles, low-flying helicopters, and other sights and sounds associated with military activity. There is no cause for alarm. All aspects of TIGHT GRIP 2 have been coordinated with local officials with the best interests of area residents in mind.

UNMIL will make every effort to inform residents around the training areas of impending activity. For safety reasons, UNMIL asks that residents who may encounter training proceed with caution. This exercise is an essential element for the UNMIL Military and UN Police units to maintain high standards of readiness during peacekeeping operations.
