Needs and response by sector

Education

South Darfur

- World Vision International (WVI) implemented a monitoring visit to schools run by WVI to monitor new students' enrolment into basic education.

- Almost 5,500 textbooks printed by UNICEF and the Ministry of Education were distributed to 10,670 children.

West Darfur

- UNICEF distributed 50 blackboards to IDPs' and nomadic schools benefiting 2,500 children.

Food Security and Livelihoods

North Darfur

- WFP participated in a Joint Rapid Food Security Assessment in Um Kadada with the State Ministry of Agriculture (SMoA) and FAO to assess the crop situation, expected food production and impact of reported poor rainfalls. The assessment report findings will be issued by the SMoA / Food Security and Livelihood Cluster.

- WFP participated in an Inter-Agency mission with OCHA, UNICEF, UNHCR, International Organization for Migration (IOM), German Agro Action (GAA) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)-S to assess the needs of returnees from refugee camps in Chad, and also to assess the needs of the local population. The mission report is to be issued by OCHA.

- General Food and Blanket Supplementary Feeding distributions are ongoing for October, with distributions completed in Dar El Salam town, El Fasher rural and Korma/Finga clusters, Kassab and Fata Borno IDP camps, Kutum Routes 2 and 3 and Saraf Omra. Distributions are ongoing in Um Kadada cluster, Al Salam and Zam Zam IDP camps.

- A meeting was held with local leaders from Malha, including the commissioner and special advisor to the North Darfur Governor, to discuss the current food security as a result of poor rainfalls during the last planting season.

South Darfur

- Data collection in the Pre-Harvest Assessment in 15 localities has been completed in South Darfur and data entry is ongoing.

- All beneficiaries under WFP General Food Distribution (GFD) in and around Ed Daein received their monthly food rations with the exception of caseloads in Adilla and El Ferdous. Dispatches to El Ferdous were put on hold after an incident last week when a Tearfund vehicle was carjacked.

- Local community leaders in Labado indicated to WFP that, thanks to an improving security situation, people are returning back to Labado from different locations, including Zam Zam, Kalma, Beleil, Sakali, Marla, Sania Afundu, Otash and Khazan Jadid. WFP has requested Samaritan's Purse to verify the returns.

- World Vision conducted a GFD where a total of 56,412 beneficiaries received 602.534 metric tons at Dereige, Sakali, Duma, Manawashi, Mershing and Almalam IDP camps.

- World Vision implemented the following activities during the past week:


    - Distributed water melon seeds to 182 farmers: 14 in Sika hadid, 73 in Nmiri and 95 in Kelling community in Rehed el Berdi locality and tools and materials for setting up gardens were also distributed in Alsalam, Otash, Sakali and Dereige camps.

    - Treated 1,325 animals at veterinary centres at Alsalam and Otash IDP camps.

    - Trained 141 farmers on vegetable production at Mershing community.

    - Conducted pre-harvest assessment in Edd Al Fursan locality.

    - Planted 35 plots of vegetables at Manawashi community. West Darfur


- A food security and livelihood cluster meeting was held on 12 October. The impact of poor rains on the food security situation was the main point of discussion. The government is planning a pre-harvest assessment for this week, with the support of WFP and FAO.
