Sudan: LRA raids in the South, civilians killed

The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) has conducted two attacks, killing seven civilians in South Sudan.

Sources said the episodes took place in the villages of Buremanga Boma and Tumba, in the province of Western Equatoria, bordering with the northern DR Congo.

The rebels are also said to have kidnapped various people, as they have typically done over the course of their infamous twenty years of destructive activity in northern Uganda.

News of the recent raids contrasts with reports featured in various regional news media over the past few weeks (Uganda, DR Congo, Sudan) in relation to the surrender of various combatants and their families; the latest report, featured in the 'Sudan Tribune' suggests that 56 guerrillas surrendered to South Sudanese troops in the very province of Western Equatoria.

Having abandoned Uganda at the end of the so called "peace talks" which ended after two years having never achieved so much as a signature of an accord, the LRA led by Joseph Kony, has broken up in various splinter groups operating in Uganda, Congo, Sudan and the Central African Republic. [AB]
